Helps and tips

Working abroad - business man sitting in airport waiting departure.

Help and tips

Your bags are packed, your currency's sorted and you've found your passport. Now all you need to know is what to do with your phone before you leave - and when you arrive. You'll also want to know how to top up, make calls and send texts while you're away.

What you need to know

Before you leave

Getting set up

Some phones are automatically barred from working overseas. We do this to prevent costly unauthorised use. If you'll be using your phone abroad, just contact our Customer Services team

Getting your voicemail

Listening to voicemail while you're away is easy - but you'll need to set a security code before you go. Just call 121, then select 4, then 2.

Finding out costs

Want to know what it'll cost you to make and receive calls and texts from the country you're going to? Just text FROM followed by the name of the country (e.g. FROM SPAIN to 4636). If you want to find out details of any bespoke rates for your company, please contact your account manager or customer services team.

We'll send you a text with everything you need to know. And if you text us while you're still in the UK, it won't cost you a penny.

Data roaming spend cap in Europe

All our customers travelling abroad have a monthly data spending cap of £38 (excluding VAT) within our Europe zone - and £100 throughout our rest of the world zone - to help prevent overspending. We'll send you free text alerts when you’ve used 80% and 100% of your monthly allowance.

Once you reach the cap limit an automatic data roam bar will be applied, and you won't be able to use any more data abroad for the remainder of your monthly billing cycle.

It's easy to opt out of the cap. Just speak to your administrator or call Customer Services.

When you arrive

Expect a warm welcome

You'll get a welcome text from us when as soon as you arrive and switch on your phone.

It'll teach you how much it costs to call home, as well as other useful information. This may vary depending on your phone model.

Your phone should automatically connect to one of the local networks. If this doesn't happen, you can manually search for a network:

  1. Go to the Settings menu on your phone
  2. Choose Phone settings
  3. Pick a network
